Grain rot beginner guide
First hour checklist

Source: Steam
Your first hour in GRAIN ROT is about learning the rhythm, not making perfect runs. The game is a horror co-op extraction builder set in a scorched wasteland where everything burns, and it expects you to lose some attempts while you figure out what matters.
Finish one complete extraction before worrying about anything else. Loot the immediate area, then head back up.
Inspect the Outpost after your first run to see what the Grinder produces and what upgrades look like.
Watch how the Corrupted move for a few minutes instead of fighting everything you see.
Set a simple goal each run: one furniture piece, one pile of scrap, one safe extraction.
Core loop: Descend, loot, extract, rebuild
The whole game loops through four beats. You descend into the shifting ruins, loot whatever you can carry, extract before the Corrupted close in, and rebuild at the Outpost to improve your chances for the next run.
Everything you do feeds back into this loop. Loot becomes materials, materials become Outpost upgrades, and upgrades let you survive deeper descents.
"Rip out furniture, and scavenge for loot before the Corrupted close in."
Prepare at the Outpost
The Outpost is your safe zone and your workshop. Before you descend, spend a few minutes checking what you have and what the next run needs.
Check your Vessels before leaving. They determine how much loot you can bring back.
Use the Grinder on leftover materials so nothing sits idle.
Coordinate with your co-op team: assign one player to watch for the Corrupted while others rip furniture.
Treat your first two or three Outpost upgrades as training wheels. Making the Outpost stronger is usually better than hoarding materials for a run you might not survive.
Gather resources in the Deep Layers
The Deep Layers are where runs actually happen. These are the shifting ruins below the Outpost, and they are the main source of GRAIN ROT resources. You can rip out furniture, scavenge scrap, and collect anything that looks useful.
Because the ruins shift between runs, the same route rarely works twice. Scan the area, note what you want, and grab the closest valuable items first.
For a beginner guide, the rule is simple: prioritize high-value furniture and scrap near your spawn, then work outward as you learn the layer layouts.
Use the Living Spark
The Living Spark is a special resource you will encounter during descents. It is rarer than normal scrap, and it ties directly into the Outpost upgrade path.
Beginners should grab it when it is safe, but not waste it on small conveniences. Save Living Sparks for upgrades that change how much you can carry or how long you can stay in the Deep Layers.
Extract and use the Grinder
Extraction is the point of no return. When you decide to extract, the run ends and everything in your Vessels comes with you.Reaching the extraction point is more important than filling your bag.
Back at the Outpost, feed raw loot into the Grinder. It converts furniture and scrap into materials you can use for crafting and upgrades. Think of it as the first step in turning a messy haul into real progress.
Use your first Vessels
Vessels are the containers and loadout slots you take with you on a descent. They control how much you can haul and what you bring back. You will not start with many options, so choose based on your goal for the run.
If you plan to rip out furniture, bring a Vessel with more capacity.
If you are scouting a new area, prioritize lighter Vessels so you can move faster.
Surviving the Corrupted
The Corrupted are the enemy pressure of the game. They close in as time passes, and they are the reason you cannot stay in the Deep Layers forever. Beginner runs usually end because someone waited too long to extract.
Keep an escape path in sight at all times.
Leave before you feel forced out. The Corrupted get more dangerous the longer you linger.
Work with co-op partners: one player can bait the Corrupted while another finishes looting.
If you are playing single-player, stay closer to the extraction point and make shorter, faster looting runs until you learn the enemy patterns.
Early mistakes to avoid
Most early losses come from the same handful of mistakes. Learn these and you will save yourself several painful runs.
Overstaying with a full bag. Extract with less loot instead of losing everything.
Skipping the Grinder. Raw loot does nothing; processed materials make the Outpost useful.
Wasting the Living Spark on minor upgrades before you understand the long-term options.
Fighting every Corrupted you meet instead of avoiding or baiting them.
Ignoring Outpost upgrades to chase deeper runs too early.
What to do next
Once you have a few successful extractions, shift your focus to Outpost upgrades and deeper Deep Layer routes. The goal is to reach new resource-rich areas and survive them consistently.
GRAIN ROT is fully playable single-player, but it also supports multi-player and co-op. A coordinated team makes extraction much safer, so try both modes and see which fits your rhythm. From there, let your next upgrades guide you toward harder layers and better gear.
